Tim Hurley- Available Thursdays

Brief History -

Hi There! I'm Tim Hurley, an internationally trained Jazz Saxophonist currently residing in the beautiful Blue Mountains of Sydney. My journey with the Alto Saxophone began with the age of 10, which led to many opportunities to play and perform with a variety of Jazz groups throughout my teenage years. At 14 years I had my first international experience via a Big Band tour to Europe with performances at the Montreaux Jazz Festival, Jazza Vienne, Casablanca Jazz Club in Amsterdam, Disneyland Paris as well as concerts in Germany. Further tours to Europe would follow as well as attendances and performances at the International Association of Jazz Educators in the United States. Providing opportunities to meet, learn from and experience the music of some of the greatest names in Jazz.

In 2003 I decided to build on my international training and successfully auditioned to study Jazz Saxophone at the Mannheim University of Music and Performing arts in Germany.

There I was awarded my bachelor's degree in 2007 followed by a Masters degree in Jazz Saxophone in 2009. During my time in Germany I was an active member of the German Jazz scene, performing with a variety of professional ensembles, including the Frankfurt Radio Big Band, and participated in various Jazz competitions with high results.

In late 2017 my journey continued to the USA where I lived for two years in Jersey City. Just next door to New York City where I indulged in arguably the greatest Jazz scene the world has to offer. Performing at many Jazz Sessions and working with local musicians. After 17 years abroad I returned to my home country Australia where I look forward to continuing the musical journey, sharing my knowledge and experiences.

My Teaching Philosophy-

Although learning an instrument ultimately involves a lot of work and commitment I strive to make the experience as enjoyable as possible for my students. Over the years I've taught many students of all ages and varying abilities and have always sought to support each individual's ambitions. Whether you're looking to become a professional musician and study, or have music as a passionate hobby, I'm able to guide you through your own musical journey with Saxophone, Clarinet or flute. Covering everything from the basics to advanced instrumental techniques, as well as music theory, aural training, rhythm, improvisation and composition. I can also work with you on any projects or band materials you have and take you through the A.M.E.B curriculum if needed. For me playing and performing with others has always been the cornerstone of learning to play music; leading me to encourage all my students to do the same by playing with them in every lesson from day one.
